His books, The Yoga of the Yogi and Yoga: The Noose of the Spirit, are definitive contributions to yoga. They are well-known, widely-read texts that continue to be used in yoga studies. K's writings also drew from the worldview of his time — Hinduism, with its emphasis on the Brahmin caste and yoga as a sacred practice for the righteous, and in contrast to the Western world's eager embrace of yoga as a popular tool for self-improvement.
Yoga and K were pioneers in the sense that they helped define yoga as a distinct movement and taught the techniques that would be the bases of modern postures and set routines. However, although K's teachings focused on cultivating an understanding of yoga as a practice, many of his students had little understanding of the primary goal of all yoga students — liberation from personal suffering, and an end to the cycle of birth, old age, sickness and death. K and his students did seek spiritual liberation, but always with a practical application that was rooted in a yogic framework. Our interest in the continuity of yoga and K's influence is in the practical application of his work. His spiritual influence was profound and not to be overlooked.
I'm not sure if K's gym was the same one that's mentioned in the Wikipedia article, but if you can get access to the PDF, it's worth a read. It's a bit more detailed than what's in the book, but overall, this seems like a great book.
I think most of the yoga and fitness folks in the US have either read this text or studied it, especially if they were raised in the South Asian community. K never went to university (he was a child prodigy). He has some interesting anecdotes about Kambar Kalanath Desikachar (the man who founded Sivananda Yoga in the 1920s in Rishikesh) and Dr. Kripalu , the man who founded the Ashtanga Yoga tradition in the 1960s. He mentions a lot of these folks in his book.
