A young man who watched the police chase a white van down a highway in Dawson Creek in September 2014 said there was nothing he could do to save the trapped, injured man who eventually died.
"It was pretty sad because it was like a little kid that, I think, was thinking of jumping from the vehicle and I guess he knew he couldn't," Adrian Batherson told CBC News.
A Crown prosecutor has now charged a van driver for manslaughter.
Batherson's interview with CBC News has been posted online as part of our series about the safety of the Trans-Canada Highway in B.C.
The collision took place after midnight near the intersection of Highway 2 and Highway 565 on Sept. 25, 2014.
A man in the front passenger seat was thrown from the van.
Batherson said he was driving to work on the Trans-Canada when he heard the police sirens.
"I kind of just looked over and I saw this whole thing go down. I kind of knew there was people in the car but I didn't know how bad it was. I looked back and I kind of saw this kid trying to get out of the van.
"He didn't look like he was hurt. I guess they were pretty sure he was hurt, so they were going to pull him out. It didn't look like he was hurt that bad. You could see there was some cuts and stuff on his arms."
Batherson said he tried to move the van off the road, but didn't see how the van was blocking the road.
"At first, I was just trying to get it to stop, because I didn't know if there was people behind it. That's when I noticed a few patrol cars 0b46394aab
